NEW IMAGE!!! "Bridgeport Bridge" off Highway 20 Born and raised on the Southern California Coast, Gaylord opened his first photography studio in 1963, specializing in portraiture, commercial photography and weddings. Gaylord began experimenting with the a unique process in 1995 and spent over three years perfecting his very own powerful, yet beautiful art form by extrapolating on the old and creating something entirely new. It came through much time, effort, persistence, and trash barrels full of discarded attempts. Unlike hand-tinters of old, he applies multiple layers of color, blending, highlighting and shadowing directly on his black and white photograph, not the palette. This is done using small brushes, cotton swabs, cotton balls and toothpicks. The result is a breathtakingly beautiful and amazingly three dimensional piece of art. His images react dramatically to light, achieving an almost holographic effect. Gaylord finds, studies and shoots his subject, develops film in his own darkroom to his standards, and then painstakingly hand-tints the images to archival standards. Each piece is painted one at a time over a period of several weeks, allowing time for the layers to tack dry in between applications. When he is satisfied with his results, the art is sprayed with a coat of ultra-violet inhibiting lacquer to protect it. They should never be framed behind glass. “My goal is to make the viewer feel they are standing at the location looking at the actual scene,” says Gaylord Barrington about his work.
